How Many Lakes Are in the Lake District?
Bassenthwaite Lake is technically the only lake in the lake district, although most visitors wouldn’t guess it from the ample hows, meres, rivers, and other bodies of water.
Are There Mountains in the Lake District?
With 10 of England’s highest mountains, the Lake District is home to countless mountains, hills, and other fells. The tallest mountain in the country is the 3,208-foot-tall Scafell Pike, located here in the Lake District.
Is Penrith in the Lake District?
Penrith is just 5 km outside of Lake District to the east. As the capital of Cumbria, you’ll find a calm and relaxing atmosphere in this nearby city of 15,000 residents.
Can You Fish in the Lake District?
While each body of water may have its own restrictions, there are more fishing spots in the Lake District than you’ll be able to see in one lifetime. The smaller rivers in the areas are abundant with brown trout, salmon, and sea trout. If you are fishing in the larger lakes and bodies of water, you will likely find pike and great coarse fishing. All anglers will need a valid fishing permit.
Can You Swim in the Lake District?
Except for local reservoirs and private bodies of water, most of the public lakes in the Lake District do allow swimming. Some spots may require a swimmer to be more skilled and adventurous, but there are also calm relaxing spots on the shore where you can take a dip to cool off on a warm summer day.

How Can You Get to the Lake District by Train?
There are several ways to get to the Lake District by train as well as many ways to travel around the lake district via train. The West Coast Mainline connects Kendal/Oxenholme, Penrith, and Carlisle with the larger cities of London and Glasgow. Another train offers direct routes from Manchester to Windermere. Local trains within the Lake District offer lines from Oxenholme call at Kendal, Staveley, and Windermere.
Is the Lake District in Scotland?
No, while it is located in the north, it is still a few hours drive south of Scotland, the Lake District is in the English county of Cumbria. It was first deemed its own administrative unit in 1974.
How to Get to the Lake District From London?
Passengers of the West Coast Mainline can get from London to the Lake District with ease. Euston Station in London is the central hub which will connect you to one of the 18 trains per day headed directly from London to Oxenholme.
