Beatrix Potter in the Lakes

Beatrix Potter is one of the most famous children’s authors of all time and her characters include Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny, Mrs Tiggywinkle and Jemima Puddleduck, to name but a few. Anyone who has read the books will recognise the landscape when they arrive in the Lake District from her exquisite illustrations. She holidayed in the Lakes for many years and loved it so much she used the income from her books and merchandise to purchase farms in the Lake District, eventually becoming a Cumbrian sheep farmer and marrying a local solicitor.

Beatrix Potter Gallery
The Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead was once the office of her husband, local solicitor William Heelis, and has remained largely unaltered since his day. The Gallery now houses an annually changing exhibition of a selection of Beatrix Potter’s original drawings and illustrations.
This years exhibition is titled “The Right Sort of Woman”. It celebrates Beatrix’s position as a strong and influential woman in the Cumbrian community. There are original letters, artworks and possessions and includes the original Peter Rabbit letter.
