Scarborough Castle
Set up on high to the North of the town, Scarborough Castle casts a striking figure against the skyline.
There has been a settlement on the site since 800BC and since that time there have been several expansions on the first fortified towwer built by the Romans in the 4th or 5th century. What we now see as the castle was started by King Henry II with the Great Tower in the 12th century.
The castle has been under several ownerships since then but is now looked after by English Heritage, who have made it worth a trip. As well as being able to explore the ruins there you are able to explore the story of Scarborough through the exhibition in the Master Gunner’s House. The display includes many fascinating artefacts spanning the whole period of Scarborough Castle’s past, all uncovered during site excavations.
