The Donkey Sanctuary

Discover how the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary helps rescue and rehabilitate donkeys. Usually there are more than 100 animals in their care – with a mix of donkeys, horses and ponies. These animals have led a variety of lives, but they all have one thing in common – they need a home.

The reasons for needing a home can be varied.
  • Losing their grazing
  • Their owners circumstances change and they need to leave their animals
  • Abandonment
  • Rescued from poor circumstances
  • Taken on from other rescue organisations

The animals live in over 60 acres of beautiful countryside and have a variety of indoor stables, barns and field shelters to make their lives as comfortable as possible.

Admission is free, however there are a number ways that people can contribute to the running costs of the sanctuary. There is a gift shop and café, a bric a brac shop, and a number of opportunities for people to donate through donation boxes.

People adopt donkeys and in so doing become ‘members’ of the sanctuary, in that they get regular information about the progress and activities of the donkeys and activities on site.
