Corfe Castle & Model Village

Corfe Castle & Model Village

Corfe Castle Day Out

Corfe Castle
Standing high on a hill, just outside Wareham, stands the remains of Corfe Castle. This iconic medieval castle dates back over 1000 years and still fascinates everyone who visits. With fallen walls and secret places there are tales of treachery and treason around every corner.

Corfe Castle is a National Trust property and hosts lots of special events throughout the year. They have dramatic sieges re-enacted, saxon and viking academies, falconry and archery displays throughout the year as well as Open Air Theatre productions.

Corfe Castle Model Village
Set in one acre of landscaped gardens, the Corfe Castle Model Village allows you to step back to 1646 before the castle was destroyed by Cromwells troops in the Civil War. The model village faithfully restores both castle and village, stone by Purbeck stone, at 1/20th scale. Stroll into the past and compare the castle as it was three hundred years ago with the ruin as it is today.

Corfe Castle Train Station
This hidden gem is often missed on a visit to Corfe but certainly worth a look. The station itself is a wonderful recreation of a 1950s railway station. The signal box has won a national heritage award and at the back of the station is a free railway museum. There is also a small enclosed garden with picnic benches if you fancy escaping the crowds and to do some trainspotting while having your lunch
Corfe Castle staion is on the Swanage Railway which is one of Britain’s most popular heritage railways, with steam trains running every day between April and October. At busy periods such as school holidays there are two steam trains a day providing a 40 minute service between Norden Park and Ride at Corfe Castle, Harmans Cross and Swanage. For the rest of the year there are trains every weekend and during the week in February half term and part of March.

The five steam engines on the line including the Battle of Britain Class Manston are regularly rotated so there is always something new to see. A new treat is to ride in the Pullman Observation Car (small supplement) when it is running as it offers superb views of the valley to and from Swanage.
